Romania, home to a variety of stunning natural landscapes, hosts a treasure trove of hiking opportunities. One such gem is the Ciucas Mountains, which I had the privilege to explore on June 10, 2023. Our group, consisting of ten eager hikers, was led by the charismatic Ioan Stoenica. Known not only as a respected International Mountain Leader but also as a TV personality in "Pe poteci spre inima ta" (translates to "On paths towards your heart" in English) and an influential figure on social media, Stoenica has a knack for managing the dynamic of the group, providing both guidance and entertainment.
Our adventure began from Cheia at around 9:00 AM, driving along a scenic forest road to reach the trailhead. As we ambled through the stunning Paraului Alb canyon, we soon veered from the familiar trail onto a steep ascent towards a ridge. This unmarked trail offered rugged terrains and exceptional landscapes.
Emerging into an alpine area, we were greeted with the sight of blooming rhododendrons nestled amongst rocks, a sight that made every step of the challenging climb worthwhile. The trail then led us to the main ridge, presenting sweeping vistas and dramatic cliffs. Luckily, the weather was on our side, enabling us to summit close to the peak of Gropsoarele.
The descent, however, offered its own set of challenges. As the rain started, we donned our waterproof gear and carefully navigated through sections of the trail still blanketed in snow. Light scrambling was required at certain parts, adding an unexpected element of excitement to our journey. Stoenica’s extensive knowledge of the trails and his ability to effectively manage and entertain the group made the entire experience safe and enjoyable.
Throughout the trip, we noted other tourists recognising Stoenica and enthusiastically requesting photos with him. His infectious charisma added an extra layer of fun to our adventure. In addition, he captured wonderful moments from our hike, sharing these mementos with us a few days later.
To partake in such an adventure, it’s essential to have the right gear. Waterproof boots, weather-appropriate clothing, a head torch, a 30-litre backpack, sufficient food and water, and waste bags were key to our preparation.
While my journey led me to another adventure in Piatra Craiului the next day, some of my fellow hikers chose to extend their experience in the captivating Ciucas surroundings. They partook in a lighter hike through Cheile Vaii Stanii, led by Stoenica, spending the night in Cheia.
Guided hiking trips in Romania, especially those helmed by charismatic leaders like Stoenica, offer an unparalleled exploration of the country's natural beauty. The less-trodden trails of Ciucas, filled with challenges, rewarding views, and unforgettable experiences, come highly recommended for any adventure seeker. It's a journey that will undoubtedly leave you with enduring memories and a deep appreciation of Romania's abundant natural treasures.
